Latium (Lazio) is a region in Central Italy, on the Tyrrhenian side of the peninsula, except for a small strip on the Adriatic side. Lying to the west on the Tyrrhenian Sea, this region borders to the north with Tuscany, with Umbria and for a short stretch with the Marches. To the east Latium borders with Abruzzo and briefly with Molise and with Campania to the south; within its present limits it has not, however, geographical unity.
History. The morphology of Latium is very complex but four main sub-regions can be defined: the Tyrrhenian coast, the inland plains, the mountains of the Latium Pre-Apennines and a true Apennine area. The coast is mainly low and uniform, broken only by the spurs of Linaro point, Mount Circeo (541 m.) and the Gaeta headland: the Ponzian Islands, which are part of Latium, lie opposite the south coast.

Vico - Frosinone nel Lazio
La cittadina, ai piedi del massiccio della Monna, a 720 metri di altitudine, in posizione panoramica sulle sottostanti valli del Cosa e del Sacco, presenta ancora intatta la cinta muraria medievale del IX° secolo, originalissima, arricchita da 24 torri merlate, quasi tutte intatte e da quattro porte di accesso. Le origini storiche di Vico nel Lazio sono incerte. Il primo nucleo abitato, organizzato ed autonomo, potrebbe essere sorto nel VI° secolo. Nell’anno 1000, riguardo alla vita di S. Domenico, fondatore del Monastero di Tisulti, si trovano documenti circa donazioni di terre fatte dai “vicalotti” alla suddetta comunità monastica. Già nel 1200 il Paese era un libero comune, dotato di propri Statuti e di podestà amministrativa e contabile. Negli anni 1303-1312, durante la guerra cosiddetta bonifaciana, Vico dovette sottomettersi ad Alatri, obbligandosi a mantenere a proprie spese un esercito in caso di guerra e a portare sulla propria bandiera le insegne comunali alatrensi.
