Villa Schindler your cosy, romantic Hotel, with the carming atmosphere of old-style villas Welcome to Villa Schindler. It was built in 1873, in a quiet, romantic spot in the middle of olive groves. In 1987 the villa was carefully restored, according to its original style.The care for details is evident in the choice of colours of the painted walls, the frescoes, the flooring, the ceiling, as well as in the big garden. The atmosphere of the hotel, with its delightfully eccentric touches, remains pleasant, charming and old-style. In the old cellar, you can savour our typical products, grown in conformity with the method of organic farming, such as olive oil, wine, grappa, salami and cheese.
Villa Schindler is not only a delightful hotel sitting comfortably in a beautiful landscape, but also an art gallery: all the rooms are filled with paintings, sculptures, and antique furniture. These pieces either are the work of Anna Brotto, or have been beautifully restored by her; she is the owner of the villa and has always managed it out of dedication. What is more, she has taken great care to enhance every detail during the restoration of the place. I
n 1995, Villa Schindler has been included in the survey "Ben tornati" ("Welcome back") and has been classed as one of the five best hotels in Italy by the Touring Club. Here, you can enjoy a wonderful holiday: you will be delighted by the spectacular scenery, the secluded beach, the magic and romantic ambience, the peaceful atmosphere of the shady garden and the swimming pool, as well as by the warm family atmosphere and the high standard of the service, which add an extra dimension of hospitality.
The story of Villa Schindler is somehow connected with the history of the Economy of Northern Italy. The owner, Niklaus Schindler, was of Swiss origin (from Canton Glarus in Central Switzerland); he was one of the Swiss entrepreneurs who introduced the textile industry into Northern Italy, as the Leglers (who possessed textile factories at ponte San Pietro, near Bergamo, where thousands of workers were employed), the Heftis, the Zopfis, the Abeggs.
This particular industry became one of the most important fields in the economy.
The restoring of the rooms and the building of the bathrooms have been carried out without many alterations to the original plan. Room n° 3, for instance, which is situated on the north side of the house, still maintains the same width as in the past: as it was used as a pantry, the original hooks have been left attached to the hand-painted beams.
The gardens we can admire now (area: 25000 sq m) are only a small portion of the former farm. Centuries-old species of olive trees have survived, while the pomegranate trees and other fruit trees have died; also the asparagus fields and the kitchen gardens have disappeared. The kitchenettes, which are in the basement for the use of the guests, contain some pieces of furniture from the old farm. Also the new pantry was used to keep food in the past, so was the wine-cellar with its 500/1000 liter oak barrels, and its concrete barrels: both of them have been accurately restored. Owing to the cooperation of local farmers the old tradition has survived : Federico Schindler produced excellent red / white wines made from Trebbiano grapes. Nowadays the guests are still offered the same wines, as well as high-quality extra-virgin olive oil, grappa, plain vinegar and local balsamic vinegar.
The cotton-mill of Roé has been closed for a long time and the farm has been closed down. However, owing to Mrs. Brotto, Villa Schindler still welcomes its guests. In 1995 it was included in the survey " Ben Tornati " (" Welcome ") and classed as one of the best hotels in Italy by the Touring Club.
The atelier is next to the charming hotel; it smells of resin and wood, when Anna is carving, of shellac, when she is restoring, of colours, when she is painting. Enthused by the success of the first paintings (water-colours and acrylics) in 1980, she decided to increase her artistic production: first of all she devoted herself to wood-carving, then to restoration and casting technique. Different marble powders are mixed with special kinds of plaster to create sun-dials, suns, bas-reliefs, which have great vitality. Day after day a new image and a new feeling take shape so sculptures, frescoes, bas-reliefs are created from inanimate matterhorses, trees, figures, studies of vigorous bodies dance as if they were suspended in space. Talent, imagination, dedication are captured either in the veins of pine wood or among the carved curls or in the antiqued frescoes. Even if her energy is expressed to the highest degree in sculpture, Annas best quality is the good mastery of such different techniques as well as the versatility of her talent expressed in every creative activity she undertakes, to my great astonishment and hers.
