Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.
History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. Le mura venete - Bergamo Alta
Le mura di Città Alta, esistenti già in epoca romana, documentate nel VIII secolo, vennero ricostruite nel corso del medioevo e più volte rimaneggiate e modificate. Della cinta romana sono rimaste alcune tracce ancora oggi visibili in via Vàgine, sotto il convento di S. Grata e a sinistra dei viale delle Mura ad ovest dei tracciato della funicolare (ex via degli Anditi).
Agli inizi dei '500 le mura si trovavano in condizioni di estrema decadenza. Nel 1556 il Senato della Repubblica di Venezia, che da oltre un secolo deteneva il dominio politico e territoriale di Bergamo, decise di procedere alla ricostruzione integrale della cinta di fortificazione della città.
L'obiettivo politico dei veneziani era di rafforzare il confine dei loro territorio di Terraferma di cui Bergamo costituiva l'estremità orientale nonché il presidio più vicino all'avversato Impero Spagnolo.
