Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.
History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. Vallée Imagna: Madonna della Cornabusa - Bergamo
Le sanctuaire de la Madonna della Cornabusa, situé dans une immense grotte de la vallée Imagna, est le plus caractéristique de toute la Bergamasque. Depuis des siècles il est un lieu de dévotion privilégié non seulement pour les habitants de la vallée mais aussi pour de nombreux pèlerins venus d’autres régions ou d’autres pays. Une fois par an, ce sont les émigrants qui s’y rassemblent.
Le pape Jean XXIII avait une vénération toute particulière pour la Madonna della Cornabusa et, peu de temps avant son élection, il se recueillit dans ce sanctuaire. C’est une des raisons pour lesquelles celui-ci figure en bonne place sur les itinéraires suivis par les pèlerins fréquentant les lieux chers à Jean XXIII.
