Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.
History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. Sotto il Monte Giovanni XXIII - Bergamo
Disteso ai piedi di dolci declivi ammantati di boschi e vigneti, Sotto il Monte si è costituito a partire dal IX secolo in cascinali sparsi sulle ultime propaggini del monte Canto (m. 710), all'ombra dell'abbazia benedettina di Fontanella S. Egidio.
Povero borgo contadino ai margini della storia e del tempo, è giunto quasi immutato fino al XX secolo e la torre d'avvistamento arroccata sulla collina a guardia della pianura fin dal X secolo, non ha mai partecipato a fatti d'arme, tanto che già nel secolo XIV era trasformata in torre campanaria per l'attigua chiesa parrocchiale.
Abbattuta la chiesa agli inizi del '900 per essere sostituita da una nuova in posizione più comodamente accessibile, la torre è rimasta a vigilare sulla tranquillità del piccolo paese fino alla sera del 28 ottobre 1958, quando l'annuncio dell'elezione al soglio pontificio del concittadino Card.
