Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.
History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. Sanctuaires dans la vallée Seriana - Bergamo
Le sanctuaire de S. Patrizio, qui se dresse sur un éperon rocheux près de Colzate, attire le regard de quiconque parcourt la vallée Seriana entre Vertova et Casnigo. Il comporte une petite église très ancienne qui date du XIIIème ou du début du XIVème siècle. Perché au sommet d’une paroi raide, il ressemble à un ancien fortin. Sa construction commença en 1580 et s’acheva une vingtaine d’années plus tard.
Chaque année, le jour de la Fête-Dieu, a lieu à Gandino une grande procession à laquelle prennent part les confréries et les habitants de tous les alentours. La basilique de Gandino, dédiée à S. Maria Assunta (N.D. de l’Assomption) est splendide. Son patrimoine artistique, qui est considérable, est conservé, tout comme celui des autres églises de Gandino, dans le musée de la basilique.
