Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.
History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. L'olio del sebino - Bergamo
Come nasce: l'olio del Sebino viene prodotto in una vasta zona che circonda il lago d' Iseo da Nord a Sud.
Sebbene sia situata molto più a nord del territorio riconosciuto come ideale per la coltivazione dell'olivo, la Lombardia ha una importante tradizione olivicola.
Grazie al particolare microclima legato alla presenza dei laghi e a fertili terreni di origine morenica, questa zona è in grado di ospitare colture tipiche di zone meridionali come oleandri, palme, viti e olivi ottenendo ottimi risultati.
La produzione di olio un tempo era ben più cospicua rispetto al giorno d'oggi, ma l'avvento dell'era industriale e lo sviluppo del comparto tessile hanno fatto sì che le coltivazioni di lino, di canapa e di gelso per l'allevamento dei bachi da seta soppiantassero le piantagioni di olivi.
