Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.
History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. Bergamo: S. Maria Maggiore - Bergamo
Die Basilika S. Maria Maggiore wurde von den Bergamaskern zu Ehren der Madonna errichtet und wird für eines der bedeutendsten Monumente von Bergamo gehalten. Die Bauarbeiten begannen 1137 und dauerten über ein halbes Jahrhundert. Die Basilika, die noch heute der Stadt gehört, wurde immer mehr mit Kunstwerken bereichert.
So kann der Besucher neben den antiken Fresken auch den prächtigen Beichtstuhl aus Holz, das Meisterwerk von Andrea Fantoni, bewundern. Sehenswert sind auch die wertvollen Dekorationen des Chorgestühls und die berühmten Holzeinlegearbeiten, die im 16. Jahrhundert nach Zeichnungen von Lorenzo Lotto ausgeführt wurden.

Die prächtige Dekoration des Chorgestühls aus Holz wurde vom Deutschen Johann Karl San zwischen 1693 und 1698 vollendet. Im Zentrum sticht der Bischofsstuhl hervor, der 1705 von Andrea Fantoni geschaffen wurde.
