Sicily is the largest island (25,426 sq. km.) in the Mediterranean; it is also the most important economically and has the richest heritage of history and art. Together with the minor Aeolian islands (the Lipari), Ustica, Egadi, Pantelleria and the distant Pelagie, Sicily is the most extensive region in Italy, though it has only the fourth highest population. The population density is slightly higher than the national average. The island is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, the Ionian to the east and the Sicilian Sea to the south-west; the Strait of Messina separates it from Calabria.

Isole Eolie - A spasso nella riserva naturale
Occupa oltre meta' del territorio dell'isola, comprendendo i due vulcani di monte dei Porri e di Fossa delle Felci. La macchia mediterranea presenta qui' le sue specie piu' tipiche: il lentisco, l'olivastro, l'euforbia arborescente, lo sparzio spinoso la ginestra odorosa e l'assenzio arbustivo. Cresce anche una leguminosa endemica delle regioni costiere del Tirreno, la ginestra di Gasperini, che in primavera macchia le coste con i suoi fiori gialli. Nelle zone piu' soggette agli incendi, si trovano specie in grado di reagire meglio al passaggio del fuoco, come l'erica arborea con i fiori a campanello, il cisto rosso con i suoi fiori rosso purpurei, il cisto femmina con le infiorescenze bianche. Con l'altitudine cambia progressivamente la vegetazione, assumendo caratteristiche sub-montane.
