Situated in the centre of Italy, Umbria is a somewhat small region, the only one in central Italy without a coastline. It belongs to the Tyrrhenian side of the peninsula and borders with the Marches to the north-east and east, with Latium to the south and Tuscany to the west and north-west. It has the fourth lowest population of all the Italian regions (only Basilicata, Molise and Valle d'Aosta have fewer inhabitants) while the density of population is about half the Italian average.
History. Morphologically, Umbria consists of mountains (29%) and hills (71%). The deep divide formed by the Tiber Valley and Valle Umbra separates the Apennines (to the east) from the Pre-Apennine hills (to the west), the former being higher and steeper while the latter are low and rounded. Some of the highest mountain ranges and massifs are the Sibillini Mountains, on the border with the Marches, Mount Maggio (1,416 m.) and mount Subasio (1,290 m.).

Lugnano in Teverina, Umbria, Italy
Lugnano in Teverina is located in a hilly area near the lower Tiber Valley which confines with the Lazio region. It is mainly an agricultural centre, with few industrial and artisan activities (textile and building material sectors).
Tourism is expanding thanks to the vicinity of the motorway exit of the "Autostrada del Sole". Brief History - Lugnano in Teverina is of Roman origin. Its strategic position, along the border between the leading factions of the Medieval period, was cause of many battles (between Todi, Amelia and Orvieto) to gain control of this territory.
After the rule of Orvieto, Lugnano in Teverina became property of Rome (the Farnese Family was decorated with the title of Perpetual Governors of the town) and later of the Church, until the forming of the Italian State.
Sights To See - In the centre of town: Collegiate Church of Our Lady of the Assumption (12th cent.), Farnese-Ridolfi Palace or "Pennone" (16th cent.) , Bufalari Palace (19th cent.)
